The yams tie in with the novel's theme of southern stereotypes, meaning Southern blacks saw yams as a delicious treat, to be eaten immediately. The narrator sees yams as symbolic of his past, but he also sees them as symbolic of his present.... something he still loves, which links the past and the present.
