What is ironic about the difference between the way blacks could speak in the North as opposed to the South?

Trying to suppress his old ways and his anger toward Bledsoe, he succeeds more in splitting himself. He mentions he will speak differently in the north and the south in order to please different people. The irony is that he is catering to white perceptions just as Dr. Bledsoe does.
