The narrator of the story is our main character. He considers himself invisible in his home (Harlem) because he never feels free enough to be himself. Rather than display his intelligence, he hides behind the facade of what's expected..... he plays to the stereotype and hides his true self. Because of this, the people in his neighborhood don't know the real man..... he's invisible to them.
