James's parents die in the beginning of the novel. Why does Dahl(author) do that and what effect can it have on his readers?

james parents passed away in a horrible death they died in agrotesque manner this can make the reader more sympathetic towards james due to their unusual death the readers can expect more unusual odd scenes in the up coming chapters
