What were the "green things" that the old man gave James

The Old Man gives him magic green pellets and tells James that if he follows a special set of instructions, something wonderful will happen to him. At first glace they look like pellets...... stones or crystals.

Take a look, my dear," he said, opening the bag and tilting it toward James.
