Jane Eyre
Describe and illustrate both Mr. Rochester’s character and his actions. Is he a typical Victorian gentleman? Why or why not?
Mr. Rochester does not display the the traits we would identify in a Victorian gentleman. He is not heroic, he has a questionable past, he keeps secrets, and rather than be the man (knight) who saves the day, he is in fact saved by Jane. This is not to say that Rochester has no redeeming features. He is honest and forthright to the point of cruelty. None-the less, a Victorian gentleman places his honor above all else and values integrity, all while exhibiting loyalty to those he considers friends.
