Mr. Rochester was twice Jane's age. Beyond this, they were from different social classes. This was considered scandalous by many. They were often perceived as having a "relationship" before marriage which added to the scandal.

if the man is the one who is rich,the woman is supposed to pay a certain money requested by that man in order to show that she could meet his standard.
