Johnny Tremain

On what terms is Johnny equal to Lt. Stranger? What does the lieutenant do for/with Johnny? Why was Johnny puzzled about Lt. Stranger's shifting behavior?

They were both equal in their riding abilities. Lt. Stranger actually befriends Johnny and teaches him how to jump with a horse.
