Journey to the center of the earth who is Gretchen

Grauben or Gretchen (in some versions I think) is the goddaughter of Professor Lidenbrock with whom Axel is in love. The professor considers her a "first-rate" mineralogist but she stays on the earths surface while the male characters proceed to the adventure.
