Chapter One is an introduction to the Professor and his family. They live in Hamburg; the Professor, Otto Liedenbrock works at the Johannæum where he teaches mineralogy. The family consists of the Professor's god-daughter Gräuben, a young Virlandaise of seventeen, Martha, andhis nephew (an orphan).
