The character's hobbies definitely speak to their social class. Irene purchases her yarn in fine colors. Those in the lower classes would spin their own yarn and dye it themselves. The narrator is a reader, which speaks to his education. Lower class citizens might have been literate, but they would not have been able to easily purchase books.
