What is the allure of fear in house taken over?

The fear is built up using the suspense of the unknown. Is the house haunted? There is a sense of "creepy" throughout the story. It reminds me of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" (1839). The reader is attracted to the unknown and disturbing.
