Antony always felt that the conspirators were mere thugs, though intelligent thugs, and murderers. He put up with them because he knew his own life was in peril. He tells Caesar's dead body that he wishes he had not been so "meek" with the conspirators,

O pardon me, thou bleeding piece of earth,
That I am meek and gentle with these butchers.
