The freedom that Mrs. Mallard momentarily feels when she thinks her husband is dead is quickly taken away when she realizes that he is not dead at all. I am not sure that I would feel thankful - having lost someone, even someone who is somewhat controlling, would be, at least for a time, very sad. However, exploring new possibilities and new ways of behavior, could be very exciting if I were not frightened by it.
