What did you think the "thing" "approaching to possess" Mr. Mallard? Why? Rereading the first page, How does Mr Mallard's secret "monstrous joy" change the way you understand the actions of Josephie and Mrs.Mallard?

The "thing" was joy.... Mrs. Mallard's actions revolved around processing her husband's death and ultimately celebrating the freedom it would afford her. Mrs. Mallard wanted to be alone because of these feelings..... her sister left her alone to grieve.
