Kate Chopin's Short Stories
What problems do you think Emily might have, and how might her past experiences have contributed to them?
I Stand Here Ironing
I Stand Here Ironing
Emily is an interesting character, mainly because she's a product of her environment. Often left on her own, her mother couldn't take care of her financially....... did this cause her to believe she was worthless as an adult? Did it add to her insecurity? Possibly, we have to remember that for everytime she herself was passed around, her sister was treated in a completely different manner. The insecurties we experience as children don't eaxctly make us eho we are, but they do have a tendency to color out futures. Thus, we see Emily doesn't really know what to do with herself or what to do with herself...... she's afraid to try....... and sure that trying would be nothing more than a waste of time.
