What does it mean that Alan Breck was talking as if he’d been Charlemagne?

Alan thinks a lot of himself and frequently embelishes his own stature and history. He acts like he had been Charlemagne (emperor of the Holy Roman Empire) when he spins his stories about his family's heritage.
