I guess I'd say that Alan, David's friend and confidant, helps Davy get back his land. They hatch a plan to entrap Ebenezer into confessing that he planned Davie's kidnapping. Rankeillor, Ebenezer's lawyer at the beginning of the novel, hides and hears this confession. He tells Ebenezer that he must give Davie a share of his estate or face legal consequences for the kidnapping.
