The overlapping in the narrative is meant to smoothly transition the reader between realism and symbolism. This type of narrative was used purposely, as the author began with realistic scenes and then quickly shifted to using metaphor in order to make a point. The use of these narrative styles was directly influenced by Lawrence's worldview, and his belief that love and sex should be approached and illustrated without taboo.
