How can a poet use figures of speech to communicate ideas in new and different way?

Poets can use figurative language like metaphors and personification to give their words more meaning. Most poems use figurative language to transcend the literal and explore the world of higher concepts. I think you need to study each poem on its own particular merits to gauge the effect of figurative language.
