LET AMERICA BE AMERICA AGAIN{poem}

The free?

Who said the free?Not me?

Surely not me?The millons on relief today?

The millions shot down when we strike?

The millions who have nothing to pay?

For all the dreams we've dreamed

And all the songs we've sung

And all the hopes we've held

And all the flags we've hung,

The millions who have nothing for our pay--

Except the dream thats almost dead today.

O,let America be America again-

The land that never has been yet--

And yet must be-the land where every man is free

Throughout the poem, Hughes contrasts his hopes for America with the reality of life for those outside of the socially and economically dominant racial, religious, and social groups. He evokes the fervent dreams of those who came to the United States because they saw it as a haven where they could be safe from the persecution they endured in their homelands - but those dreams of America have never come true.
