That's a tough one. I think the heart of the matter goes to what do American Indians really desire. It is not good to make them do anything. That has already been done to them. I think, in the long run integration is the best. By integration, I don't mean assimilation rather than a sort of multiculturalism. THat would mean integrating them into communities while celebrating what makes them unique. This, of course, is easier said than done but from a long term perspective, it is the best way to go. Everybody needs to feel wanted within greater society regardless of their ethnic origin. The Canadian model of multiculturalism has worked well,
"Canadian multiculturalism is fundamental to our belief that all citizens are equal. he Canadian experience has shown that multiculturalism encourages racial and ethnic harmony and cross-cultural understanding."
Having understood that Canada, like many other countries, still has challenges integrating indigenous populations into mainstream society. Still this model has proved itself and might just work in the United States.
