At the beginning of the movie where some soldiers come to the settlers, I think asking for men. I can't remember correctly, but it was towards the beginning.
I have not seen the movie for a very long time but I think the male settlers decide to go to Albany and negotiate the dealwith the British. I think the British do come asking for soldiers.
The above answer is correct. They went to Albany to get Terms of Service from General Webb, to make sure they would be granted leave to defend their homes should to French attack them while they were away at the Fort.
