Why does Cora belong to Magua?

Question

It is repeated several times in Chapter 30 that Cora belongs to Magua.

Magua insists that Cora is his and Uncas reluctantly admits that this is true, but why ?

Cora belongs to Magua because he has taken and laid claim to her..... he doesn't need another reason. She is his captive.
