In Chapter one we learn that Cassie is a black adolescent girls with only brothers for siblings. Cassie is a bit of a tomboy who has mostly male friends. Cassie has an understanding of the world which is quite mature for a girl of her age. She expects the racial slurs she gets but does not accept them. Cassie is fiercely protective of her family.
