What clues does this chapter provide as to why Mr. Wheeler was beaten? (Chapter 9)

The location where the union meeting was being held was set on fire. Russell and Dube note that they didn't know if the union leaders had made it out.

So apparently Mr. Wheeler didn't actually get beat but John Moses was killed.
