While in Strawberry what did Cassie, Christopher John and Little Man do which could have gotten them into lot of trouble?

The three snuck into the courthouse in their attempt to find a an "outhouse" for Little Man. Once Little Man went into the men's restroom, Cassie paused to get a drink of water from the drinking fountain. At the time, both of these things could have gotten them into trouble because it was illegal for blacks to use the same facilities as whites, this event occurred during the time of segregation.
