Why does Stacey run away?

In Chapter Nine, Stacey is worried about their finances and explains to Cassie why even the good crop isn’t likely to cover their debts and the tax. Stacey also tells her that when Papa comes home for the revival, he will ask him about getting a job. When his father is unable to return, Stacey takes the lead and leaves hime in order to help provide for the family.
