Why were the kids surprised about Mom fighting? What reason did she use to fight when she was younger? (Chapter 6, Let the circle be unbroken)

The kids couldn't picture their very proper, mother fighting. She excused herself by saying that even though Bud was older, she could tell him what to do because she was his aunt.
