Lies My Teacher Told Me
What does Loewens analysis of the word 'settlers' reveal about the predispositions of language? Can you identify other words that are similarily loaded with meaning?

Loewens writes that,
"Textbook authors still write history to comfort descendants of the “settlers.”
Somehow the word settlers has usurped the meaning of indigenous as being more important to the fabric of a nation. It is as if the authors of textbooks are saying that white settlers began the identity of a given place. Other terms loaded with understated meanings are "immigrants", "Indians", and "civilization".
