Describe and explain the significance of the island .

The island seems to be eerily unreal, and yet, this is what Martel wanted...... it is his story. It is yet another example of faith, believing what you cannot touch or feel. The island represents just that..... believing the unbelievable.

Martel:

" the island represents something that is just beyond what can be reasonably believed...the island represents the leap of faith, that if you choose to believe it, you must abandon your excessive use of reason."
