How do we see Pi's desperation in this chapter?

In Chapter 77, Pi becomes so desperate to survive that he sets aside the things he never though himself capable of in order to stay alive. Raw meat and fish were once unthinkable food source, which now are seen as delicacies..... even Richard Parker's feces are seen as a possibility for sustenance.
