how does life of pi compare to other maritime novels and films?

Life of Pi is pretty unique. Martel's novel mixes adventure, magic realism, and parable to tell his story. I might consider the Rime of the Ancient Mariner as having similar traits but I'm not sure of any stories that have a boy with various zoo animals on a raft with him.
