In Chapter 1-5 How do we know this is a flashback? Why would the author use a flashback in a tale of survival?

Flashbacks are a form of plot manipulation to give limited information. In this case, flashbacks set the context and character of the story. We learn about Pi's unique view on life, religion and animals. This sets the theme and context for the rest of the story.
