Where did Pi arrive at the end of the story? Why does he help the tiger?

Pi and Richard Parker eventually land on the Mexican beach. Richard Parker immediately runs off into the jungle without acknowledging Pi, which Pi finds deeply hurtful. There was a kinship between the two. You can also lookat the tiger being an extension of part of Pi.
