One of the main themes in this novel is the responsibility of American citizens to stand against the government if the government's actions are unconstitutional. When Marcus reads a portion of the Declaration of Independence, which emphatically states that the people have the right "alter or abolish" the government if it fails to follow the laws it's meant to uphold, he begins to take action. The unsubstantiated arrest, incarceration, and torture of citizens based upon data collection is a direct threat to privacy rights. Marcus' actions are not always right and proper, but his intentions are justifiable. This, of course, is my opinion.
