How does Louisa May Alcott use dialogue rather than description to reveal aspects, or character traits, of each of the March sisters?

How does Louisa May Alcott use dialogue rather than description to reveal aspects, or character traits, of each of the March sisters? I am confused as to why the dialogue is used in the book.

One example of dialogue as a tool for characterization can be found in Jo's language. She is witty, and she has a quick tongue. She also uses language that he mother doesn't deem ladylike. Thus, her language illustrates her take charge attitude, outspokeness, tomboyish ways, and self-confidence.
