What role does Aunt March play in the romance between Meg and John?

Meg seems a little apprehensive about John at this point but when Aunt March threatens to withhold her inheritance should she marry such a poor boy, Meg rebells. Meg sticks up for John and says that she will marry who she wants. Hearing this, John gets all excited that Meg may just return his affections.
