Why is Mr. march hardly ever pesent in the novel?

Mr March is absent during most of the novel because he's away serving as a war chaplain. Alcott has chosen to have a very strong and well loved masculine figure in the novel, but she's also chosen to have him complement the women, who are the true "story."
