WE are never told where the plane was being evacuated to. It was shot down. We can be confident this was around WW2.

Us, as readers, were never told where they were going to. im making an inference here but probably evacuating because of ww2 or even going somewhere to sing since they are choir boys. It is never truly revealed in the story. An answer to the second part, the plane was most likely not shot down but i guessing a stalled or failed engine or explosion because the plane was in half and th piolot was in the air for a long time and most likely the man with the blow horn was in the water.
