The theme of power and leadership includes the conflict between Ralph and Jack. Ralph wishes to the boys to stay civilized, to do things in the proper order, everyone doing their job and being useful. Jack, on the other hand, makes his bid for the position of leader first through the boys' bellies..... hunting for food, and second, through fear.
