can you describe the line "as long as theres light we're brave enough.but then? and now that thingss squat by the fire as thouhj it didn't want us to be rescued....?

This has to do with the fears that plague the boys. Much of it happens at night when they feel alone with their terrors. During the day they have each other for "reinforcement". At night they feel alone. All their fears and insecurities that prevent their rescue are projected onto the "beast".
