1) They roast the pig, and later begin to dance and chant like they're barbarians. Civilized behavior has completely disappeared.

2) He's going to hide in a thicket until it's safe to escape back through the forest.

3) the echoes of savage screams

4) a naval officer

5) the island is "shuddering in flames." I think the most significant of the events at the conclusion is that the ship sighted the island burning, not the signal fire.
