While the hunters are doing their job to provide food for the group (they kill a pig), they have abdicated all responsibility for the signal fire and it goes out. This is important because a ship passes the island and might have rescued them if the hunters had done their job. The hunters, as they work to find food, become increasingly savage and warlike, painting their faces and enjoying the killing as much or more than they enjoy ensuring the survival of the group. Ralph still believes in the conch and the meeting; Jack prefers to make fun of people like Piggy and to grow more and more uncivilized.
