Chapter 6: What is going on in the “outside world” while the boys are on the island? How does this add to the theme of the story?

We never know exactly what is going on in the outside world but it is implied there has been a nuclear war. Even adults destroy themselves and the island is simply a microcosm of what is happening in the "real" world.
