I think we must first understand that Golding believed that humans are inherently flawed and self-destructive creatures. Then examine the fact that Simon maintains that the only beast on the island lies within the hearts of each boy. This, of course, was far too metaphorical for any of the boys to comprehend. Simon, however, is able to get to the heart of the matter. When confronted with the idea of the beast, Simon thought of man at once "heroic and sick". Golding believed that each boy, each representation of greater society held black and deep primal desires that damned himself to destruction. In the end even Simon, Golding's Christ-figure, could not save them from themselves.
