Discuss the ideas of civility and barbarianism that exist in the first chapter of the novel.

In the first chapter, the boys have not yet descended into savagery. They are still products of the old world of adults, rules, and punishments. Certainly Jack is more aggressive than other boys but he still feels the rules of civility mandated by his old live. The barbarism does not really begin until the next few chapters.
