Simon sees the beast in a clearer way than the others. His insight goes over the other's heads. Simon sees the beast as themselves. He attempts to address the issue, "what's the dirtiest thing you can think of?" Of course the boys humiliate him with crude expletives. Simon, Golding's Christ figure, shrinks in dismay.
