For Chapter 3"Huts on the Beach," Why does Ralph feel the shelters are so important? (other than to keep them sheltered from the weather)

Shelter is a basic human need. Not only is it protection from the elements it also gives a sense of home and permanence which these boys so desperately need. Shelters also give them the illusion of protection from the "Beast" that, at this point, the boys are afraid to even mention.
