Initially Ralph is excited about the prospects of finding himself on a tropical island with no adults. AS the story progresses we see Ralph attempting to build a rudimentary civilization. Unlike many of the boys, he sees that food, shelter and cooperation are essential if they are going to survive and be rescued. Indeed, Ralph insists on a signal fire while most boys would rather hunt, play and satisfy their mood of the moment. Ralph attempts to create a small semblance of democracy at the meetings (ex. using the conch as a speaking tool). Through these examples the reader connects Ralph with the idea of a "civilized" society despite the chaos that overwhelms the boys.
